(Retest-)Reliable and valid despite low alphas? An example from a typical performance situational judgment test of emotional management

چکیده

Situational judgments tests (SJTs) offer many advantages over traditional trait questionnaires but often show low internal consistency, presumably due to heterogeneity of the underlying constructs (Lievens et al., 2008; Whetzel & McDaniel, 2009). Some have suggested test-retest-reliability (TRT) as better-suited reliability indicator for SJTs. Here, we analyzed TRT typical-performance emotional management test (TEMT, Freudenthaler Neubauer, 2005)—an SJT. We additionally report validity evidence with respect a maximum-performance SJT (STEM, MacCann Roberts, 2008) and widely-used Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue, Petrides Furnham, 2003). For 2 week-interval, found satisfying both scales TEMT (inter- intrapersonal management; 0.76 0.83, respectively). Intrapersonal ability correlated moderately highly all four TEIQue main factors total score, whereas interpersonal showed medium relations. Correlations STEM were smaller. Our results support that SJTs can good reliabilities—when assessed via TRT—and emphasize importance distinguishing between typical- abilities.

Refining Situational Judgment Test Methods

Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs) assess knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. They present scenarios, which are based on real events, to be judged, understood, scaled, and interpreted by the examinee. These instruments have been used to evaluate cognitive theories and training programs, and to predict performance. This paper presents the argument that SJTs have potential to renew and reinv...

Effects of Response Instructions on Faking a Situational Judgment Test

A situational judgment test (SJT) and a Big 5 personality test were administered to 203 participants under instructions to respond honestly and to fake good using a withinsubjects design. Participants indicated both the best and worst response (i.e., Knowledge) and the most likely and least likely response (i.e., Behavioral Tendency) to each situation. Faking effect size for the SJT Behavioral ...

Test–retest reliability and effects of repeated testing and satiety on performance of an Emotional Test Battery

The P1vital® Oxford Emotional Test Battery (ETB) comprises five computerized tasks designed to assess cognition and emotional processing in human participants. It has been used in between-subjects experimental designs; however, it is unclear whether the battery can be used in crossover designs. This is of particular importance given the increasing use of ETB tasks for repeated assessment of dep...

Validity evidence for the situational judgment test paradigm in emotional intelligence measurement.

To date, various measurement approaches have been proposed to assess emotional intelligence (EI). Recently, two new EI tests have been developed based on the situational judgment test (SJT) paradigm: the Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU) and the Situational Test of Emotion Management (STEM). Initial attempts have been made to examine the construct-related validity of these new ...
